Church

Church stands in a prominent location approximately 80 m. from Steeles Avenue West. Its geometry has been derived from a square with “open arms”, extending from East to West. The middle axis of the church is aligned South-North with the main entrance to the Church located in the south elevation. The structure has a dominant form, balanced and symmetrical, harmonizing both modern design and traditional architectural elements.

Access to the main entrance will lead through John Paul II Square, from Archibishop Stanislaw Dziwisz Street, where a statue of the Pontiff will be aligned with the centre axis of the Church.

The outside shell of the Church displays the traditional look of a Polish Church while keeping elements that would reflect the heritage of many within the community; the portals and lower elevations are reminiscent of those found in France - the homeland of St. Eugene De Mazenod.

The narthex of the Church is accessible from the east, west side, and central doors are flanked by Procession of Saints sculpted in stone, creating a portal modeled on traditional gothic cathedrals. A traditional church steeple is placed above the central part of the narthex.

At the north axis of the structure, above the apse, a distinct architectural stain glass will provide the power of natural light, into the presbytery. As a structure made of natural coloured stone, covered with a copper roof and decorated with stained glass windows, Saint Eugene de Mazenod Church will become the focal point of the Polonia Millennium 2000 Development.

John Paul II Square is an extension of the Church building into the landscape and serves as the ceremonial entrance to the Church. The planting and statue create a formal garden. The trees and clipped hedges are arranged in a formal, symmetrical alignment framing the Church building and the statue and provide a quiet, introspective atmosphere appropriate to the Church.

More of a ceremonial entrance than a driveway, this space is also the physical link between the Church and the road. A formal pattern will act as an exterior ‘carpet’ setting off the statue and formal plantings. Different paving patterns will delineate the vehicular circulation from the pedestrian.

The north side of the Church faces a garden and gathering area. This garden is also an extension of the Church building and is a peaceful enclosed area for contemplation, private discussion, small intimate gatherings and outdoor ceremonies. The plantings are a visual buffer that screens the parking lot. Trees and shrubs surround a circular walkway with seating. Special paving marks the connection with Church entrance.
